UN Youth of Helsinki organizes study trips abroad on a regular basis. The purpose of the trips is to get acquainted with the UN’s global operations and to become familiar with the important themes of the UN, such as human rights, development issues, and peace work.
2015: Study trip to Brussels and The Hague
UN Youth of Helsinki organized a study trip to Belgium on 11-13 May 2015. During the trip, we visited international bodies and institutions in Brussels and The Hague, and met with UN youth in Belgium. In Brussels, we visited MEP Nils Torvalds as a guest at the European Parliament, UNRIC, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO Headquarters). The Hague targets were the Court of Yugoslavia (ICTY), the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
2017: Study trip to Copenhagen
UN Youth of Helsinki organized a study trip to Copenhagen on 9-12 March 2017. The theme of the trip was UN Security Council Resolution 2250 – ’Youth, Peace and Security’ and the building of Nordic cooperation between UN youth. During the trip we visited the Embassy of Finland, the Nordic Youth Council and the UN City of Copenhagen as guests of UN Women, IOM (International Organization for Migration) and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund). We also met with the Ambassador of Finland, Ann Marie Nyroos, who invited us to her residence to discuss world politics and diplomatic life. After the visits, a representative from the CRIC (Center for Resolution of International Conflicts) held a workshop for us on Resolution 2250. Together with UN youth in Denmark and UNA Malmö members, we also organized a workshop where we planned future cooperation between our organizations.
2017: Study trip to Rome
The UN Youth of Helsing organized a study trip to Rome with the theme of sustainable food production. On the way, we visited local food organizations in the United Nations, FAO, the World Food Program (WFP) and the International Agricultural Fund for Agriculture (IFAD), and met with young Italian UN and various experts in sustainable food production.
